My first meme
By Elizabeth | May 12, 2007
Leigh at Key West or Bust tagged me for a meme, and since it’s food-related, I’m posting it here. Here are the rules:1. Link to the name of the person who tagged you.
2. Include the state and country you’re in.
3. List your top 5 favorite places to eat at your location (locally).
4. Tag 5 other people (preferably from other countries/states) and let them know they’ve been tagged.
I live in Lansing, Michigan. For those of you in other countries, if you look at a map of the U.S., Michigan is the one sticking out of the top shaped like a mitten. My favorite local places to eat are:
1. Flapjack Shack. Our go-to family style restaurant, Flapjack ( as it’s known around here) has delicious pancakes, omelettes, and my personal favorite, the Belgian Waffle topped with strawberries and whipped cream. They also have delicious sandwiches served with thick-cut ruffled chips and homemade French Onion dip.
2. Emil’s Italian Ristorante. The first restaurant my husband took me too on a date was to Emil’s. It is tiny, seating less than 100 people, so there is always a wait, but it is worth it. Their spaghetti and meatballs are to DIE for.
3. Sir Pizza. What makes Sir Pizza unique is two things-one, it is not a take-out place but rather an actual restaurant with a menu. And two, the pizzas are made with a flat crust and cut into squares, and the meat toppings are chopped into teeny pieces so you get some in every bite. My husband has been eating Sir Pizza since he was a kid.
4. Clara’s. Also unique because the building is a former train station and it sits right next to the train tracks. You can be seated either in the main restaurant or in an actual train car converted to a dining room. When a train goes by, the whole train car shakes. Clara’s has a TWELVE PAGE menu, and everything is delicious.
5. El Azteco. Known by everyone as “El Az”, but pronounced “El Ezz”. This restaurant has an interesting history. It started in downtown East Lansing, just across from campus, in the basement of a block of other stores. To get in, you stood outside on the sidewalk and then filed down these steep stairs until you got into the actual restaurant, which was so dark, you could barely see. There was no ventilation and everyone smoked, so it got pretty funky on weekend nights. They eventually moved out of that building to another location in East Lansing, and then opened a restaurant in Central Lansing. My husband and I have been eating there for 22 years, and we never get tired of it. The chips and salsa are fantastic, and he always gets the plain bean burrito, called the “Frijole Burrito” and abbreviated to “Free Burr”.
Now I need to tag five other people who live in other states and/or countries. Fortunately I know some folks in other countries! I’m tagging:
Laura, in Portugal
Graham, in England
Owen, in the Isle of Man
and then because they are foodies like me, I’m tagging:
Merry from Merry’s Kitchen
Ann from Feeding Time at the Zoo
Please leave me a comment after you do the meme so I can come and read it!
