Make your own Lunchables!

Posted on December 15, 2007 by Elizabeth

I saw this post on Simple Daily Recipes from Jill, who served her kids crackers, meat, cheese and a squirt of cream cheese on top, and called them “Mom’s Munchables”. Her kids loved them! And it got me thinking, why not make my own Lunchables? What I think kids like most about those is the compartments for everything, and that it comes with a juice pouch and a little candy bar. Here’s what I’m thinking I could do:

1. Buy some Lunchables when they go on sale, serve them to the boys, save the containers.

2. Wash out the containers really well and let them dry.

3. Fill the compartments with store-brand Ritz crackers, pieces of low fat ham or turkey lunch meat, pieces of 2% Milk cheese singles, a 100 % juice box, and a baggie of baby carrots or apple slices. I suppose I could toss in a Hershey’s miniature candy bar, too, but I doubt they would miss it.

4. Top with a piece of Glad Press ‘N Seal, so everything stays in place.

Voila, homemade Lunchables, lower in fat, healthier, and probably cheaper, too. Genius!

    You ARE A GENIUS!!!

The Glad Press ‘N Seal cover is perfect! I could use a Sharpie marker to draw funny faces & sweet notes to the kiddos.

Oh! I like the way you think. I look forward to learning more from you.

This is a really great idea! There’s enough sodium in traditional lunchables to build a salt sand castle. Plus fresh meats and cheeses will taste so much better. I bet all of your son’s friends will be begging their mom’s to make them for their lunches too.

A very very good idea. Thanks for sharing that.

That’s a really good idea! You might even be able to find sectioned rubbermaid containers that could be of the same effect without the need to buy the real lunchable first.

I make my own Lunchables ALL the time! The boys want them, but don’t eat the cheese or crackers that come with them — or the drink or the dessert — so basically I’m paying for 5 slices of substandard deli meat!

I don’t save the containers (when I do get them) but I use the take and toss containers — the small ones — when I send them in with Josh for lunch. He has a habit of throwing away either the tops or the bottoms of the containers so I don’t want to spend a fortune on the rubbermaid ones.

Anyway — it’s a great idea! It’s a good way to introduce some “healthier” options too – I usually add a few baby carrots or some apple smiles or some grapes when I send them with Josh.
