Get your kids eating more fruit and veggies with ProduceGuru!

By Elizabeth | January 16, 2008

This post is a reprint, it originally ran on Monday January 7th, and then disappeared in a giant database fiasco.

Everyone should be eating more fruits and vegetables, that is undisputed. Getting kids excited about eating them while they are young is a great way to help ensure that they will want to eat them as adults. ProduceGuru.com has information and recipes for getting more produce into your kids’ diet in a way that is both fun and tasty! Based on purchases, these are the top ten fruits and veggies purchased by families with kids:

Potatoes
Bananas
Onions
Tomatoes
Apples
Carrots
Grapes
Salad mix
Cucumbers
Cantaloupe

Under the “Recipes for Kids” section, I found recipes for Parfaits made with fresh blueberries, frozen bananas dipped in chocolate, and “Polka Dot Applesauce”, which is applesauce dotted with raisins and other dried fruits. I’d be careful serving this one to younger children though, they might not be used to having something to chew mixed in with applesauce.

The Veggie Recipes section could use some work, though, it only had recipes for grilled potatoes/onions/carrots, tomato and mozzarella salad, and flavored cream cheese spreads. Where are the suggestions for steamed baby carrots, green beans, or peas? My kids eat all of those!

Overall, I think ProduceGuru does have good tips and recipes, although the recipes for adults are more gourmet-Goat Cheese and Pomegranate stuffed celery, Lobster Spring Rolls with Watermelon Sesame Sauce-which is not the kind of cooking I do, but might interest some of you! So I would check it out for ideas, definitely. And then get to the store and buy more produce, it’s good for you!

Another good resource is a new book, “The ABC’s of Fruits & Vegetables and Beyond”. Educators, parents (and grandparents for that matter) will be very interested in the book, as it helps mold kid’s attitudes toward these important foods from the day they start learning the alphabet. Out only six months, it has already been bought in bulk by a number of educational organizations and recommended by leading nutritionists. From best selling food writer David Goldbeck and Jim Hensen writer Steve Charney. More at HealthyHighways.com

I’ve never tried it, as my own little guy is only 16 months, but I have heard that having kids help you grow their own veggies can help. If that is the case then the seed catalog I just got has a fun idea: The Cook’s Garden has a “Kaleidoscope Mix Carrots” which is not just orange, but also red yellow and purple carrots. They’re pretty cool looking. I think I’ll grow some myself this year!

I should try some of those recipes on my fiancé. As much as I love his parents, they never foisted vegetables on him as a child, so now he gags at the sight of broccoli. He actually got gout (!!!) a few years ago, probably from a lack of veggies…he’s learning, slowly, but I can use every bit of help. :P I’m going to teach our kids to love vegetables!
