Fun Frugal Lunches

One thing I love about the Internet is that random page surfing can sometimes lead me to really useful information. From a photo I found on Flickr searching for photos tagged “frugal”, I clicked a link and ended up at Clever Dude and found a post called Frugal Lunch, guest-written by his wife Clever Dudette. She showed a week’s worth of frugal bag lunches that cost a total of $11.00 to make. That’s a big savings over the cost of eating at Subway or McDonald’s or even the company cafeteria every day.

From that post, I found the cute post An Illustrated Frugal Lunch, where Clever Dude shows how he makes a month’s worth of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches at a time and then freezes them two to a baggie. Sometimes it seems like so much trouble to make lunch in the morning, I never thought of making sandwiches ahead of time and freezing them!

But it did surprise me to read in the comments that some of the readers had never heard of PB&J (a reader from England, apparently they don’t eat that combination there), also a reader from Australia who wanted to know if he could freeze Marmite and Cucumber sandwiches (eww). Another reader asked if there was really such a thing as grape jelly. I really assumed that everyone knew what grape jelly is.

So from a photo on Flickr to a post about PB&J-which is why I love the Internet.

I never thought about freezing PB&J sandwiches. We use wheat bread anyway, so that’s good to know wheat doesn’t get soggy like white bread.

This is really a simple lunch. But is that enough?

lol! I know, it always blows my mind when I realize that pb is a totally American thing. Believe it or not, many of them find it just as disgusting as we find marmite. I can imagine how off-putting peanut butter would be if you’d never experienced it before.

I love how the Internet works. I’ve found some interesting stuff looking at Flickr photos, too.

I have thought of making sandwiches and freezing them, but I haven’t actually done it, yet. What I need to do is start trying to make healthier lunches for my husband since he’s trying to lose weight. Something healthier than packaged lunch meat, but not super expensive.

We freeze a lot of stuff, but I’ve never considered freezing Pb & J sandwiches. I wonder if that would work with other types of sandwiches? Time to do some experimenting.

Never thought about freezing sandwiches, though I do freeze a lot of other stuff, as we grow a lot of fruit and veggies. If I start on sandwiches I might need a bigger freezer. Hey-ho.
