Well, whether we like it or not, summer is coming to an end and it’s time to start thinking about back to school plans, including the dreaded (at least for me) routine of packing school lunches. This year I am determined to make school lunch packing easier on both myself and the boys by keeping lunchbox items more organized. I took a packed lunch to school every day as a kid, and I can still remember that first day, sitting down in the gym at long tables, opening up my paper lunch sack and pulling out my sandwich baggies. Meanwhile across the table from me, popular (yes even in the 1st grade) Lori O. was opening a Yogi Bear lunchbox with her name written in pink on a neatly cut piece of tape on the front. She had her name on everything, her Mom must have spent an hour writing on those pieces of tape.
Of course these days we have labelmakers that can print out Color labels to help kids identify their lunchbox (in case more than one kid has Iron Man or Hannah Montana or whatever is popular this year), label their pencil case, their calculator, their backpack, their jacket, anything they are taking to school that you don’t want to end up in the Lost and Found.
There’s a REALLY great tip on the DYMO website for using labels for kids with food allergies-you can print out a label with your child’s name, allergic condition, and emergency contact info, and place it on their desk so that a treat containing that food doesn’t end up on their desk by mistake. At $29.99, DYMO labelmakers look like something I definitely need to pick up to help me organize my kitchen and make school lunch packing easier and less stressful for both me and the boys this year.

Oh crap.. gotta go make lunch for Josh. I’d forgotten about it.

We had one of these at my old job, and EVERYONE from EVERY DEPARTMENT was always trying to steal it. They’d be like “oh we just need to use it real quick” and then we wouldn’t see it for weeks. They really should have just invested in several. It was the most popular commodity in the store.
That is a great tip about the allergies/emergency contact info – we used to have one of those at a place I worked and everyone trued to steal it too :)
It’s way too organized for me to use at home though, lol.
