Are you going into debt to pay for food?

By Elizabeth | August 26, 2008

I am shocked every time I purchase any food item at how high prices are. I struggle every time I think about making a weekly menu, because I want to serve a variety of healthy foods to my family, but the fact is, Hamburger Helper is still affordable, and a pound of chicken breasts isn’t. It’s actually a good thing that I don’t have a credit card anymore, because if I did, I know I would be charging groceries. Fortunately we only have one card with a low limit and I don’t carry it with me. We learned our lesson from our Chapter 7 Bankruptcy. Credit card debt is one of the topics I came across on Bills IQ, a website that gives you a free debt quiz and then shows you how financially fit you are. Yeah, um, I got a D. Mostly because we don’t have an emergency savings fund, we don’t invest, we don’t have a lot of life insurance, and we don’t have college funds for the kids. I know, I know.

My husband has a good job and he works hard, but he also commutes 45 minutes each way, and with the price of gas, the price of food, and heck, the price of everything else, his paycheck stretches to the limit as it is. We even went without air conditioning this summer to save money on our monthly electric bill. Bills IQ has a free financial health check-up quiz you can take, and then they will show you how you are doing. They have expert tips available to help you improve your financial stability, and there are personalized offers that can help you do things like refinance your mortgage or get lower rates on insurance. And if you are using a credit card to buy groceries because that’s your only option, hang in there. You do what you have to do for your family.

I use my credit card to pay for groceries because I get at least 1% back, 3% if it’s one of my top spending categories for the month. But it’s the only card we use, and I pay it off every month. Otherwise it wouldn’t be worth it.

I got a B on that quiz - no investing and no budget. College accounts? What are those?

I will have to check that out. I spent $70 for 3 bags of groceries and milk today! I’ve been getting better about it though … I’m only letting myself go grocery shopping twice a month and that’s helped significantly.
