Four Foods on Friday #46
Here’s this week’s Four Foods on Friday questions. You can play along too by answering these questions on your blog and then posting your link in a comment on the FFoF post on Fun, Crafts, and Recipes.
#1. Egg salad or deviled eggs. How do you prepare?
#2. French fries. Do you make homemade or frozen?
#3. Gravy. What do you use – homemade, jar, can or from a package?
#4. Share a recipe for a hot (temperature, not spice) dish.
1. I have a confession to make- I have never made egg salad! For deviled eggs, for every six whole hard-cooked eggs, I mash the yolks with 3 tablespoons mayo and about 1/2 teaspoon ground mustard. I mix that together, sprinkle in a little salt, then spoon it back into the halved egg whites. I sprinkle a little bit of paprika over each one for a dash of color.
2. I have never made homemade french fries! I like the thick frozen steak fries, which I used to fry in oil in my electric skillet but now I bake them.
3. For pouring over mashed potatoes or for Thanksgiving, I like jarred Heinz gravy. But my Shepherd’s Pie recipe calls for an envelope of dried brown gravy mix, and I find that I enjoy that over mashed potatoes as well.
4. Here’s the Shepherd’s Pie recipe:
Ingredients
One pound ground beef-not too lean, I used 80/20
Salt, Garlic powder, onion powder
One envelope brown gravy mix
Water for making gravy
Frozen green peas (about a cup)
Frozen corn kernels (about a cup)
Instant roasted garlic mashed potatoes (or plain, or homemade)
Shredded cheddar cheese
Directions
Brown the ground beef in a skillet, dump it into a colander to drain, then put back in skillet.
While the ground beef is browning, microwave the peas and the corn until defrosted.
Sprinkle the ground beef with salt, garlic powder and onion powder to taste.
Make the gravy according to the directions and stir it into the ground beef, set aside.
Add the peas and corn to the beef, stir to combine, and pour it into an oven-proof casserole.
If you are using instant mashed potatoes, make them according to package directions.
Top the ground beef and veggies with the mashed potatoes, spreading gently over the top. Sprinkle the surface of the potatoes with the shredded cheddar.
Put it in the oven at 375 (your temperature may vary depending on your oven) until the cheese melts and the middle is warm.

1. Egg Salad: I don’t use the egg slicer because I like big chunks of egg in my salad. I premix all the other ingredients separately: mayo, yellow mustard, onions (diced fine), celery, s&P, celery seed… then mix it all together.
Mix yolk with yellow mustard and mayo. Somtimes top with bacon… so good.
2. I do both. When I make fries, I make belgian fries which are the most amazing things ever. I blogged about it last week. (If you like big fries, you’ll love these) http://travelturtle.net/planning-fun-in-belgium-with-a-side-of-fries/
3. I only make my own or use the powder stuff. I don’t like the jar, never tried the can. I love mixing my own with the powder stuff. It’s intense.
4. A recipe for something hot…. I’ll have to come back for this.

I’m too lazy to make shepherds pie, but turning those ingredients into a meatloaf with mashed potatoes on the side would work for me!
