Four Foods on Friday 56
By Elizabeth | November 21, 2008
#1. What’s the worst tasting food you’ve ever eaten?
#2. Share a funny or embarrassing story about a meal you’re made.
#3. What food do you burn or have problems cooking most often?
#4. Name two foods you’ll be eating on this Thanksgiving.
1. Thinking back to all the foods I’ve eaten in my life, I can honestly say that the worst tasting food I’ve ever eaten is stuffing cooked inside a turkey. I find it absolutely revolting.
2. When my husband and I were first married, he invited a friend from high school over for dinner. I made spaghetti, salad, and garlic bread. For the spaghetti sauce, I combined diced canned tomatoes with sauteed onions and garlic and a little tomato paste, just a quick, easy sauce. I served it up and we all took a bite. And looked at each other. Something was wrong with the sauce. I went into the kitchen to see if maybe the tomatoes had expired or something. Nope. I had used Mexican-style canned tomatoes instead of Italian-style, meaning my sauce was flavored with chili powder and cumin. And Chris’ friend was being so polite, saying he would eat it anyway! We went out for pizza.
3. The number one food that I have the most problem making is slow-cooker pot roast. Trust me when I say I have tried EVERYTHING. I’ve tried browning the meat, not browning the meat. I’ve tried cooking it with a little water, I’ve tried a packet of onion soup mix, I’ve tried cream of mushroom soup. And every single time, it comes out tough and chewy. I would give anything to have a Food Network chef show up at my door and show me how to make perfect pot roast!
4. In addition to turkey, stove top stuffing, and mashed potatoes, here are two recipes we’re having:
Grand Marnier Sweet Potatoes- Bake sweet potatoes at 375 degrees until soft, about 35 minutes. Cut in half, slip the flesh out of the skins, then chop into big chunks. I like to let them cool so they don’t fall apart, we like our sweet potatoes chunky. Get out a large electric skillet or frying pan, and put in about half a stick of butter cut into slices and let it melt. Sprinkle a good size handful of brown sugar over the butter and cook on low until the brown sugar melts. Pour in Grand Marnier liqueur, maybe a cup? I don’t measure, I just pour and taste :) Add the chunks of potatoes and gently turn them to coat. Cook this on low, stirring often but very gently, until the liqueur cooks off and the sweet potatoes are buttery and sweet with that fantastic orangey flavor. YUM.
Grandma Culver’s Black Cherry Jello Salad- This recipe has been handed over and entrusted to me, because it would not be Thanksgiving in my family without it. It makes a lot which is good, because we all take home leftovers!
2 small packages Black Cherry Jello (or your favorite flavor)
8 oz. cream cheese
2 (8-oz.) containers Cool Whip
2 large cans crushed pineapple, well drained (reserve 2 c. juice)
Dissolve Jello in 2 cup boiling pineapple juice. Place in refrigerator until Jello just begins to
set. In blender, mix crushed pineapple and cream cheese. Blend in Jello. In large mixing bowl, fold
together Jello mixture and Cool Whip. Pour into 13×19-inch baking pan and chill until set. Scoop into a large serving bowl. Save the Cool Whip containers to store leftovers, it tastes delicious for the next few days after being made!

1. I absolutely love stuffing cooked in a turkey. I think it tastes soooo goooood. But, a food I wasn’t happy about… this is hard. I like Tikka Masala, but I went to an Indian restaurant in my neighborhood and it was the worst tasting tikka masala I’ve ever had. Something about the way they made it didn’t make me happy.
2. Well, I can’t think of a funny or embarrassing story about a meal I’ve made that would top the funny story of a meal my dad made. He was using one of my cookbooks and decided to make crepes. He was very careful to follow the recipe. When we sat down to eat them, I thought they were extremely sweet. We all did. It was almost like they were on the verge of caramelization or something. So sweet. I decided to look at the recipe to see how much sugar was necessary. It was only two tablespoons. Considering how many crepes we made, I couldn’t imagine 2 tbsp. would be that sweet. So, I asked my dad how much he used and he said 1 cup. 1 CUP!?!? I said he only needed two tablespoons, he said that he actually lied when he said 1 cup. He actually used two cups but figured he must’ve used too much so he told me he only used one. No wonder they were so sweet.
3. I have problems making pork items. I don’t always care for the way they turn out. And I always either overcook or undercook anything I bake. And to think, I used to work at a bakery!
4. I am going to make artichoke and spinach dip for an appetizer and pecan pie for dessert. The dinner portion is very, very traditional.

Elizabeth, your two recipes sound delicious! I’m fixing Stove Top for Thanksgiving dinner too. Our kids like it better. :)
About the roast, I got this simple recipe after tasting this lady’s roast which was delicious. I always buy a rump roast, put it in my slow cooker, cover with water, add 3 or 4 bay leaves and salt, cook on high for an hour then down to low for several hours until tender. (maybe all day) If I cook veggies with it, then I’ll add carrots and potatoes an hour or two before eating.
Happy Thanksgiving!

I think the old crockpots cooked pot roasts the best. Today’s crockpots are more like little ovens and cook faster.

Turkey with stuffing is truely AMAZING! I look forward to eating it for days on end around Christmas time!!! Turkey on the day, then sandwiches for a week afterwards! :-) I also occasionally buy a stuffed turkey joint, which is delicious and can feed 2 for about 3 days.. one helping for a meal and the rest for lunches or supper! Roll on Christmas dinner! :-)

I’m exactly the opposite: i don’t like stuffing that isn’t cooked in the bird - i find it too dry. :p

#1. What’s the worst tasting food you’ve ever eaten? Vegetarian lasagna, I feel queasy just typing the words.
#2. Share a funny or embarrassing story about a meal you’re made. Last Thanksgiving morning I started to prepare everything for the huge meal I had planned. After removing the turkey from the fridge (which had been in there thawing for 3 days) I discovered it was still frozen solid. So we had ribs on Thanksgiving and Turkey on the Friday after.
#3. What food do you burn or have problems cooking most often? Pork tenderloin, no matter what I do always comes out bad or too dry :(
#4. Name two foods you’ll be eating on this Thanksgiving. Hopefully the bird thaw in time this year and we’ll have turkey, and it would not be Thanksgiving without pumpkin pie.

Stuffing cooked inside a turkey really turns me off. I work with a chef, and she says that’s the surest way to get food poisoning!

@corrin - Yes I would have to agree. Better cook it separately. It would taste better too.
