This week’s questions are about funny-sounding foods, pronounciation, and something made with mozzarella cheese. Here we go!
1. What’s the funniest sounding food or ingredient you know of?
I’ll admit it, I have a totally juvenile sense of humor. I still giggle when I see the word “wiener” for hot dog. And there’s this dessert that’s popular in England called “spotted dick”. Yes, I’m a 10 year old boy inside.
2. How do you pronounce “cavatelli”?
Well you’d think it would be cah-vuh-tell-ee, right? Wrong. This is what it looks like, a small pasta shaped sort of like a hot dog bun:

and according to the Italian-to-English online dictionary, it’s pronounced “gavadeel”. Also, did you know that “minestrone” is NOT pronounced with a long “e” on the end? It’s “minestron” with a long “o”? I’ve sure been saying it wrong my whole life! See what you can learn from Four Foods on Friday?
3. How do you pronounce “gnocchi”? I thought it was “knee-oh-key”, but I listened to the pronounciation here http://www.forvo.com/word/gnocchi/, and it’s more like “nyock-ee”. What are they? It’s boiled potatoes, put through a ricer, with flour mixed in, then rolled out into tubes, cut, and you press your thumb into each piece.

When I ate at Le Castagne in Philadelphia last week, one of my tablemates ordered gnocchi and I asked her if I could taste one. I prefer my pasta to be, well, less potatoey personally. But it’s a very popular dish, I know that.
4. Share a recipe that calls for mozzarella cheese. The Italian Sausage Lasagna recipe I posted yesterday is topped with lots of mozzarella!
If you want to play along this week, since I already answered the pronounciation questions, tell me what some of your favorite more unusual pasta dishes are, or how you thought those words were pronounced. And visit the home of Four Foods on Friday to see more posts with answers to this week’s questions. Salute!

Anele- Obviously you’re a ten year old boy inside too :) hee hee!
I have to admit that I didn’t know what cavatelli and gnocchi were. I usually order Chicken Marsala when we’re at an Italian restaurant, and I don’t pay attention to most of the other entrees. :)

Gavadeel, wow, I would never have guessed. Thank goodness I’ve never said the word since it’s the first time I’ve come across this dish :)

Wow this looks delicious good work you did!
Wow! that looks good! it makes me hungry hahaha!
Well … that’s only sorta true. If you’re speaking proper Italian, they are pronounced ca-va-TEL-lee and NYOCK-kee respectively. But there are many dialects in Italian, and so pronunciations vary a lot. My family hails from all over the south, and immigrated to America about a century ago. The southern accents do tend to be a little coarser, and they drop a lot of syllables, so my family would say ga-va-DELL and NYOCK. I wrote about it a while back here: http://hedonia.seantimberlake.com/hedonia/2007/06/an_eyetalian_gl.html

Looks so yummy! I will surely try it.
Gnocchi is one of my all time favorites. I was actually corrected on my pronunciation by a server, but glad to know in the long run. Same thing happened with Quinoa. Great site you have here! Will be back!
I’m pretty conmfortable with English, Italian is all needed for foods alone ..not pronunciation!
