I’m late posting today because I’ve been at the township library. My 13 year old son Ryan applied for and was chosen as one of 16 summer Teen Volunteers, and today was his first day! He helped sign kids up for the Summer Reading Program and then ran a water-relay-race game outside. I’m so proud of him!
With the boys home on summer break, I told them that it’s my intention to serve them breakfast and lunch every day. It’s one thing for them to get their own breakfast during the school year when they wake up so early, but now that they can sleep in a little, there’s no reason I can’t make them breakfast.
They both bought hot lunch this past school year, so they are used to getting a hot, well-balanced meal. I can’t just point them in the direction of the cold lunchmeat and cheese slices and say “there’s your lunch, make it yourself”. When I told the boys that I had plans to serve them lunch every day and was reading some of the menu ideas, my eleven year old actually said “but Mom, Sloppy Joes are a DINNER food”.
Yes dear, they are, but they can also be a lunch food! So what I’m planning to do is use Christine Steendahl’s brilliant Kid Approved Meals. She had printed out an entire thirteen week breakfast and lunch planner with menus, recipes and shopping lists and put them in a three ring binder to sell at a conference. I found out she had the binder for sale from a link in one of her free weekly Recipes for Kids newsletters, which you can subscribe to at the bottom of the Kid Approved Meals site. Christine is also the genius behind Dine Without Whine – The Family Friendly Weekly Menu Planner that I am an affiliate for.
SO, anyway! For the rest of the summer, my Menu Plan Monday post will have breakfast, lunch, and dinner and probably a snack or two as well. Remember to leave a comment if you like my menus or want to point me to a recipe you think I should try. Get more menus every Monday at I’m an Organizing Junkie, home of Menu Plan Monday!
