Four Foods on Friday #49
By Elizabeth | October 3, 2008
#1. Turnips. Love em or leave em? Unless there were turnips in some kind of stew or something that I ate, I have never eaten a turnip that I know of. What do they taste like?
#2. What’s your favorite roasted dish? Roast Turkey at Thanksgiving, definitely.
#3. Salsa. What kind do you like? We buy Pace Picante Sauce in “mild”. I’m not sure how it’s different than salsa, but it’s the one we like!
#4. Share directions on how to make your favorite quick meal, meaning start to finish in about 30 minutes or less. Spaghetti with Prego Mini Meatball sauce, garlic bread, corn:
Fill pot with water, cover, place on burner on high to bring to boil. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
Add salt to boiling water then drop in spaghetti noodles. Set timer for 9 minutes. Put garlic bread in oven.
Open cans of corn, dump in corning dish, put in microwave for four minutes. Stir spaghetti. Pour Prego Mini Meatball sauce into a saucepan, cover, turn burner to medium-high.
When timer goes off for spaghetti, drain noodles. Take bread out of oven and corn out of microwave. Stir spaghetti sauce, check that it’s heated through, and dinner is served.

Arnold Grains & More Breads
By Elizabeth | September 30, 2008

Arnold Bakeries has introduced four new varieties of breads packed with whole grains and other heart and body-healthy ingredients while keeping the breads low in calories and high in taste. Of the four, I received Grains & More Double Fiber Bread and Grains & More Double Protein Bread for review.
The Double Protein Bread has, per slice, 7 grams of protein and 3 grams of fiber. The Double Fiber Bread has a whopping SIX grams of fiber per slice. Both breads have no cholesterol, NO high fructose corn syrup (yay!) and no trans fats.
So how do they taste? Really good! Make toast or a sandwich with either of these varieties of bread, and you will stay full for hours. Because I don’t worry about not getting enough protein, I would probably buy the Double Fiber bread, but I do like the Double Protein bread for it’s slightly sweet taste. What really surprised me is that my kids ate both breads too. As of October 2008, Grains & More Breads will be available in supermarkets and mass retail locations in the Northeast and Southeast under the Arnold brand name and in the Midwest under the Brownberry brand name, making it easier to ensure that Americans are achieving their recommended nutritional requirements and staying healthy. And eating delicious bread at the same time!

Menu Plan Monday Sept. 29-Oct. 4th
By Elizabeth | September 29, 2008

I’ve been really slacking off on planning my menus lately, but it’s going to be a busy week so I need to not have to worry about running to the store at the last minute. Here’s what I’m planning to make:
Monday- Fish filets, candied yams, roasted green beans
Tuesday- Meatloaf, mashed potatoes and brown gravy, steamed frozen peas
Wednesday- Baked Cheese Manicotti with Homemade Marinara, green tossed salad, italian bread
Thursday- Tuna Noodle casserole, crescent rolls, steamed peas
Friday- Pizza Night. I’ll be making myself a homemade Hawaiian BBQ Pizza using Pillsbury Thin Crust Pizza Dough.
Saturday- Slow Cooker Shredded BBQ Chicken on rolls with oven fries and corn

Smashies organic applesauce pouches ROCK!
By Elizabeth | September 26, 2008
They might be a small company now, but I predict that Smashies is going to be HUGE, because the idea is pure genius! Certified organic, kosher applesauce with nothing but Organic apple puree, organic apple flavor and ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), and nothing else. NO preservatives, NO added High Fructose Corn Syrup or Sugar. 50 calories a pouch, delicious, portable, easy to eat, easy to store-brilliant!
Eating a Smashies pouch couldn’t be simpler-unscrew the top and hand it to your child. If they don’t finish it, just screw the top back on and put it away for later. There’s no spoon or bowl needed, and the pouch is sized just right for little hands. It tastes just like you made it yourself, too. Kids used to the yellow applesauce in jars might be surprised at the dark color of Smashies, but that’s because there’s nothing added to it. Once they taste it, the color won’t matter, they’ll be too busy enjoying the smooth, fresh apple taste!
Smashies are not in stores yet, but you can order ten pouches for $14.99 using the PayPal link on the site. That covers the cost of the ten pouches plus shipping anywhere in the country. Really, for an organic product, that is not a bad price at all. And it’s so good! Kaitlyn loves Smashies, see? I bet your child will too!
